Traditionnellement le domaine privé, des relations familiales, a correspondu aux femmes. Appeler la grand-mère pour s’informer sur son état de santé, calmer l’amie qui se voit en danger sur son lieu de travail, rendre visite à l’hôpital au cousin qui s’est cassé la hanche, appeler les frères/sœurs et beaux frères/belles sœurs pour leur souhaiter joyeux anniversaire… Toutes ces actions communicationnelles sont réalisées principalement par les femmes.
